How to Pick the Right Bowling Shoes for More StrikesMost of us can't think of a more boring subject in the world of bowling than bowling shoes. What's the big deal? After all, they're just shoes!
This couldn't be farther from the truth. Having a good pair of bowling shoes is essential to a consistent high scoring and improving game. Think about this for a moment... When you set up, what is all your weight and the weight of the bowling ball supported on? When you approach the line, what is helping you stay your course? When you go into your slide, release the ball, and finish your follow through, what is helping you keep your balance and making sure you are rock solid? Your BOWLING SHOES! Thinking about the world of shoes. There are running shoes, climbing shoes, cross-trainers, etc. Each one has a specialty. Running shoes are designed for basically forward motion. So they can be narrow. Have you every noticed how hard it is to balance left-to-right in running shoes? They aren't designed for that. Tennis shoes, on the other hand, are designed for a lot of sideways motion. They offer a great deal of balance. Bowling shoes are designed for balance. Balance is essential to your game. If you can't be balanced, you cannot be consistent and improve on your game. Some would say that having a good pair of bowling shoes is more important than the ball. The reason is that you could have the best ball in the world, but if you can't stay balanced, your game will suffer. Choosing a Pair of Bowling ShoesThere are basically 4 types of bowling shoes -- sneaker-type, house shoes, leather shoes, and top-of-the-line.Sneaker-type bowling shoes fit just like...sneakers! They will be comfortable from the get-go. They will, in general be the cheaper shoes to buy. One problem with them is that they may not offer you very good support and balance. This is because the material is cloth, so it will not hold your foot very well. You may actually feel your foot moving from side to side even though the shoe is firmly planted on the ground. This is not good for balance. House shoes are perhaps a little bit better than sneaker-type shoes because they may offer a little more support. The problem with house shoes is that it may be hard to find a pair that fit you well. If you do, you may not be able to find the same pair next week. Leather bowling shoes will not fit as well as sneaker shoes when you first put them on. The leather has to be given time to mold to your foot. But given time they will become very comfortable. Leather shoes will probably last longer than sneaker-type bowling shoes because they are made of leather. These shoes will provide you with a great deal of balance and support. Top-of-the-line shoes are, well...top-of-the-line. You are going to pay top dollar for these shoes because they are considered the best. You might even buy one that is more expensive than your bowling ball! Some top-of-the-line bowling shoes even allow you to change the sole of the shoe according to lane conditions. OK, so who makes all these shoes? There are many brands out there and probably more coming out every month. Here are some of the top names. You can get to their website by click on their names -- Linds, Brunswick, and Dexter. If you want help with sizing your shoe, click here for a great web page on how to figure out your shoe size.
